Why constraint stabilises systems — until it doesn’t
A useful way to think about AI is as a threshold change in social metabolism — not merely a technology to be regulated, or a labour market shock to be absorbed. The opening move is simple: we are crossing a human-equivalence break. AI’s efficiency at producing “intelligence” is becoming so disproportionate to human cognition that familiar assumptions of scarcity begin to fail.
Once intelligence becomes cheap, the binding constraint shifts — though public debate tends to stay fixed on jobs, wages, and substitution. The harder question is whether a society can still coordinate attention, meaning, and action when explanation and interpretation become abundant. On this view, civilisational trajectories are shaped less by ideals than by constraint sets, buffers, and binding cycles: food, fuel, land use, energy. If AI alters the constraint set, it alters the form of coordination itself.
The most compact metaphor here is metabolic. Fertilisers created abundant carbohydrates; the generations that followed had to learn to live with diabetes. Smartphones created abundant cheap content; the generations that followed may have to learn to live with attention dissipation. AI is not simply “more content.” It is more cognition — more interpretation, more plausible speech. If societies already struggle to metabolise cheap information, they will struggle more with cheap intelligence.
This line of thought leads to an uncomfortable conclusion. If abundance destabilises coordination, then “AI for good” cannot be only an engineering project or a policy project. It becomes a question of social organisation. And the stabilising response may not look like liberal openness, pluralism, or endless deliberation. Under conditions of overload, societies may reach for constraint: narrowing the world, reducing degrees of freedom, stabilising cognition through doctrine. Call it a dogmatic paradise — a world made governable again by declaring some questions settled.
I want to foreground this argument as it stands because it is one of the few attempts to treat intelligence abundance as a civilisational condition with its own compensations and pathologies — rather than as a problem to be solved or a future to be managed.
What follows is a response: why constraint can indeed cool a system under overload — and why, in doing so, it is thermodynamically temporary, eventually becoming the new source of heat.
Dogma works because abundance is not neutral. When information, interpretation, and intelligence become cheap, attention fragments. Volatility increases. Every signal competes with every other. Under these conditions, coordination collapses not because people disagree, but because nothing holds still long enough to anchor shared action. Dogma, in this sense, is not stupidity or repression. It is a cooling mechanism. It narrows the world. It reduces degrees of freedom. It suppresses cognitive diabetes by declaring some questions settled, some distinctions irrelevant, some arguments no longer admissible. In doing so, it allows coordination to persist even when understanding thins.
But the very properties that make dogma stabilising also make it dangerous.
Once a system relies on dogma to hold attention together, it becomes brittle. Error-correction slows. Deviations are no longer treated as signals but as threats. Conformity hardens into virtue. Ritual replaces judgment. Humiliation becomes a governance tool rather than a side effect, because enforcing dogma requires visible penalties for non-alignment. Power concentrates around those who control the authorised interpretation, rather than those who bear responsibility for outcomes.
At that point, constraint stops functioning as insulation and starts functioning as a new heat source.
The system no longer overheats from excess information, but from suppressed variation. Energy builds up in unacknowledged contradictions. Dissent migrates underground. Adaptation is delayed until failure becomes unavoidable. What began as a mechanism to survive abundance turns into a mechanism that amplifies collapse when conditions shift.
This is the paradox: dogma can stabilise a system long enough to survive intelligence surplus, but it cannot remain benign indefinitely. Every dogma generates the conditions for its own exhaustion. Constraint gives birth to evasion; certainty gives birth to fragility.
The problem, then, is not whether dogma is “good” or “bad.” It is that dogma is thermodynamically temporary. It cools the system only by displacing heat elsewhere — into suppressed memory, blocked transmission, and deferred reckoning.
Seen this way, dogma is neither solution nor failure. It is a phase.
